Michael Schumacher GP2 test, Jerez, 12 Jan 2010

Michael Schumacher is feeling strong after his first real test on his comeback road to Formula One.

This week, Schumacher completed a three-day test in a GP development car in Jerez, Spain, including 52 laps on the first day and a 130 whopping laps on the final day.

“I could really drive a lot on this last day of testing, and it worked out perfectly,” said Schumacher, who just turned 41. “I am very happy with the way testing went here. We worked well, our times and consistency was good and we could do everything we had scheduled to do. I feel fit, I felt comfortable immediately back in the car — hey, let’s go for it!”

Schumacher, a seven-time world champion, recently signed a three-year deal with Mercedes Grand Prix (formerly Brawn GP). Despite his age and his absence from Formula One, he says his goal is to win the championship before his contract with Mercedes GP ends, reports Agence France-Presse.

Before announcing his Formula One comeback, Schumacher had raced in a few karting events. The GP test in Jerez was his first quality time behind the wheel of a world-class racer; GP2 is the feeder series for Formula One. The next time he turns any significant laps will be inside the cockpit of a Mercedes GP car during the official Formula One test next month.
